Actor Michael Ealy hopes younger viewers watching Muhammad Ali’s story in “The Greatest” come away thinking about the discipline behind his fame, not just the fame itself. In an exclusive interview with Baller Alert, the actor, who portrays Malcolm X in Prime Video’s new drama, explained why Ali’s work ethic should resonate with Gen Z.

“Outside of Muhammad’s conviction, you know, I would say the work ethic,” Ealy said when asked what he wants young people to take from the series.

He described the sacrifices he believes defined the boxer’s early years.

“You’re talking about a man who sacrificed so much, didn’t smoke, didn’t drink, didn’t party, you know, didn’t have a girlfriend.”

Ealy was pointing to the intensity of Ali’s commitment, particularly during an era when the young fighter was establishing himself in boxing while becoming a public figure whose influence reached well beyond sports.

“Like he was just so focused on training and then being a voice for the nation,” he continued.

For Michael Ealy, the message is especially relevant in a social media era when visibility can arrive long before someone has spent years mastering a craft. His comparison places the pursuit of lasting recognition alongside the instant attention available through online platforms.

“And so, I hope that the younger generation, Gen Z, will look at that as an example of what it takes to become an icon rather than, you know, feel entitled to being an icon just because you have a platform with 12,000 followers.”

The Greatest follows Ali before he became a worldwide symbol of athletic excellence and political conviction. Born Cassius Clay in Louisville, Kentucky, he won Olympic gold in Rome in 1960 and captured his first heavyweight championship by defeating Sonny Liston in 1964. Later that year, he became known as Muhammad Ali.

Those formative years provide the backdrop for the series, with Jaalen Best starring as the young boxer. Michael Ealy appears as Malcolm X, the influential religious and civil rights figure who developed a close relationship with Ali during a crucial period of his life. Their connection became part of Ali’s changing understanding of faith, identity, and the responsibilities that came with his growing platform.

The series also explores the family behind the famous fighter. Omari Hardwick plays Ali’s father, Cassius Clay Sr., while Dana Gourrier portrays his mother, Odessa “Bird” Clay. Kai Parham appears as his brother Rudy Clay, Amin Joseph portrays Sonny Liston, and Giovanni Ribisi plays trainer Angelo Dundee.

Created by Ben Watkins, who also serves as showrunner, The Greatest is the first authorized scripted television series about Ali. His widow, Lonnie Ali, is an executive producer, and the production includes Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society alongside Authentic Studios, Roc Nation, and other partners.

Ali’s beliefs later cost him years of his boxing career. In 1967, he refused induction into the U.S. military during the Vietnam War, citing his religious convictions. His heavyweight title was taken away, and his draft evasion conviction was ultimately overturned by the Supreme Court in 1971.

That history helps explain why Michael Ealy sees Ali’s story as more than a collection of championships. His hopes for younger viewers center on understanding the effort, focus, and personal cost that preceded the icon.

All eight episodes of “The Greatest” arrive on Prime Video Wednesday, November 4, 2026.
