Michelle Obama is showing support for Simone Biles, who recently withdrew from the Olympic finals and Thursday’s individual all-around competition at the Tokyo games.
On Tuesday, the former First Lady tweeted words of encouragement to Biles and Team USA.
“Am I good enough? Yes, I am. The mantra I practice daily. @Simone_Biles, we are proud of you, and we are rooting for you. Congratulations on the silver medal, Team @USA!” Mrs. Obama wrote.
It was initially reported that Biles was withdrawing due to an injury. However, the 24-year-old cleared the air, revealing that mental health issues were the real reason for her exit. The announcement came after she vaulted during team finals. The gold medalist lost control in midair and finished 1½ twists instead of 2½. After the blunder on the vault, Biles told reporters she was “okay, just dealing with some things internally which will get fixed out in the next couple of days.” Gymnastics officials announced her departure the following day.
Like most, USA Gymnastics “wholeheartedly” supported Biles’s decision to prioritize her mental health. In a statement, they said that they “applaud her bravery,” which makes her a role model.
In addition to Mrs. Obama, celebrities and athletes have flocked to Biles’ defense. Janet Jackson, Taraji P. Henson, and Hoda Kotb all sent well-wishes to the star gymnast. Justin Bieber posted a touching tribute to Biles on Instagram, writing, “nobody will ever understand the pressures you face!”
