An assistant coach for the University of Michigan women’s gymnastics team has resigned and been charged after an incident involving an 18 year old member of the team, according to the university.
A university spokesman said the coach, Scott, was seen engaged in a sex act with the athlete in a car in an apartment complex parking lot in Ann Arbor on Oct. 8. The spokesman, Kurt Svoboda, said Scott was suspended the day the school learned about it and resigned on Oct. 15 during the disciplinary review.
Scott was arraigned on a charge of committing an indecent or obscene act in public, and he is due back in court on Nov. 14. The athlete is also reported to face the same charge, with an arraignment scheduled for Nov. 5. The university has a policy that restricts romantic relationships between coaches and student athletes.
Scott, 39, is a former Michigan gymnast who was part of the 1999 national championship team. He was hired as an assistant coach in July 2017. The school has cut ties with him. “We are confident this was an isolated incident,” Svoboda told MLive, adding that the school runs thorough background checks on employees.
These are charges only, and Baller Alert will share any outcome that is reported.
