The Mike Bibby Heat move looks close: the point guard is leaning toward signing with Miami after the Washington Wizards bought out his contract on Monday, the Sun Sentinel reported. Two independent sources confirmed it to the paper, and NBC Sports cited a report from Sam Amick saying Bibby intends to sign with the Heat once he clears waivers.
Bibby, 32, was acquired last week from the Atlanta Hawks at the trade deadline. Multiple reports said he agreed to give up his $6.2 million salary for next season with the Wizards so he could move to a contender.
Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. is the deadline for a player to be waived and still be eligible for another team’s playoff roster. If Bibby is released by then, he can sign with a new team at any point before the regular season ends and still play in the postseason.
The Sun Sentinel said Bibby’s playmaking and shooting would give the Heat an instant upgrade over their current starting point guard, although he would not fix the team’s lack of a defensive deterrent at the position.
