Mississippi has taken a step in tackling illegal immigration with the introduction of the Mississippi Illegal Alien Certified Bounty Hunter Program (House Bill 1484). Announced by District Attorney Matthew Barton and authored by State Representative Justin Keen, this new legislation is aimed at expediting the deportation of undocumented immigrants while aligning with the Trump Administration’s renewed immigration priorities.
Under the program, certified bounty hunters will be offered a $1,000 reward for each undocumented immigrant they successfully help identify and report for deportation. The rewards will be funded by the state and administered through the general assembly, with the goal of encouraging collaboration between law enforcement and private citizens.
Barton stressed the urgency of addressing illegal immigration, citing the financial strain it places on taxpayers and local resources. “This program is a vital step in assisting law enforcement to better enforce immigration laws,” Barton stated. He also highlighted President Trump’s renewed focus on immigration since taking office this week, noting that this initiative is a local effort to complement federal actions to secure the borders.
DeSoto County has experienced a significant rise in undocumented immigrants being booked into local detention centers. According to Barton, over 1,000 individuals were detained during President Joe Biden’s administration—an increase of nearly 150% compared to President Trump’s previous term. This spike has placed immense pressure on local resources, fueling the push for more aggressive measures like House Bill 1484.
State Representative Justin Keen emphasized the legislation’s focus on public safety and supporting federal efforts to combat illegal immigration. “This is about protecting Mississippi communities,” Keen said, referencing recent tragedies involving undocumented immigrants. “President Trump’s administration has made deporting illegal immigrants a priority, and we’re proud to support that agenda here in Mississippi.”
