Mississippi Mayor Fires Police Chief of Ackerman — Entire Department Resigns in Protest [Video]

Ackerman Police

The town of Ackerman, Mississippi, is grappling with a severe law enforcement shortage after nearly the entire police department resigned in response to a political dispute.

The conflict arose when the town council voted to reappoint former Police Chief Martha Caradine. Mayor Lauren Carson vetoed the council’s decision, resulting in Caradine being demoted to the rank of patrol officer.

The council was unable to override the veto, prompting a wave of resignations throughout the department.

Following the mass resignation, only Caradine and one other officer remain on the force. The second officer has submitted a two-week notice, leaving Ackerman with minimal staffing.

In the meantime, the Choctaw County Sheriff’s Office has taken responsibility for law enforcement duties while the town works to recruit new officers and appoint a replacement police chief.

Caradine had served as police chief since September 2024. The resignations occurred on or around September 11th, 2025, immediately following her demotion and the mayor’s veto of her appointment.

Mayor Carson confirmed that the town is actively seeking qualified officers to fill the vacancies and restore full police coverage. She also emphasized that the Choctaw County Sheriff’s Office will continue assisting Ackerman during the transition to maintain public safety.
