MMA veteran Travis Fulton has been indicted on federal charges involving child sexual abuse material, according to ESPN and court documents reported on February 23, 2021.
ESPN reports that Fulton, who is 43, is charged with sexual exploitation of a child, possession of child pornography and receipt of child pornography in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa. He has a detention hearing scheduled for Wednesday. An indictment is an accusation, not a finding of guilt. According to the report, a conviction could carry a sentence of up to 70 years in prison. Fulton had not publicly responded to the charges at the time of the reports.
According to court documents cited by ESPN, prosecutors allege that in November 2020 Fulton tried to persuade a minor to take part in sexually explicit conduct so it could be recorded. The documents also allege he knowingly possessed, or tried to possess, explicit material involving minors on a flash drive. Prosecutors say the camera and flash drive were bought outside Iowa, which is why the case falls under federal jurisdiction.
ESPN also reports that Fulton is awaiting trial in a separate case on willful injury and domestic assault charges. Prosecutors in that case allege that he struck a woman in September 2019. Those charges are also allegations at this stage.
Fulton is known in the sport for fighting more than 300 times as a professional since the 1990s, a record for career MMA bouts. He is nicknamed “The Ironman.”
