Moderna is trying to get the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve a second COVID-19 booster shot for adults.

CNN Health reports that on Thursday Moderna asked the FDA to authorize a second Coronavirus vaccine so that adults can be given a fourth dose. Any adult who has ever gotten an initial shot from any of the approved vaccines would be cleared to get the fourth Moderna shot.

In a news release, Moderna said their request to have a second booster shot was based partially on collected data.

“The request to include adults over 18 years of age was made to provide flexibility for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and healthcare providers to determine the appropriate use of an additional booster dose of mRNA-1273, including for those at higher risk of COVID-19 due to age or comorbidities,” wrote Moderna. “This submission is based in part on recently published data generated in the United States and Israel following the emergence of Omicron.”

Pfizer–BioNTech just recently submitted a request to the FDA for EUA of a second booster shot that would be targeted toward adults aged 65 and older, CNN Health reports.
