Monica McNutt Named Best Studio Analyst After Rising From Georgetown Captain To ESPN Star

Monica McNutt was recently named AWARDING BODY’s best studio analyst, capping a run that has made her one of the most recognizable voices in basketball media. The ESPN analyst and Knicks radio voice covers the NBA, the WNBA, and college hoops, and her path to the desk started on the court.

She was born October 24, 1989, and grew up in Suitland, Maryland, in Prince George’s County. She starred at the Academy of the Holy Cross, where she was named MVP of the Maryland Private School Tournament, then stayed close to home to play at Georgetown University.

At Georgetown, Monica McNutt made her name on defense. She played 131 games from 2007 to 2011 and served as team captain for two seasons. As a junior, she averaged 11.2 points, led the Hoyas with 73 steals and earned Second Team All-Big East honors. Her senior season ended in the Sweet 16 with a loss to UConn.

The WNBA never came calling, so McNutt changed lanes. She graduated from Georgetown with an English degree and earned a master’s in journalism from the University of Maryland in 2013.

Then came the grind most viewers never see. She put in work at WJLA ABC7 in Washington, the American Sports Network, beIN Sports, and NBC Sports Washington. In 2019, two doors opened at once. MSG Networks brought her on as an alternate broadcast host, and ESPN hired her as a studio and game analyst for the ACC Network.

She added MSG pregame and postgame duties in 2021 and now hosts MSG PM. At ESPN, Monica McNutt quickly became a fixture on SportsCenter, Get Up, First Take, NBA Today, Around the Horn, and WNBA Countdown, along with live NBA and WNBA game coverage. Since 2022, she has also reported for ABC’s NBA Finals and NBA Draft broadcasts, and she was part of NBC’s coverage of the 2021 Summer Olympics. In October 2024, ESPN signed her to a multi-year extension alongside Chiney Ogwumike, Tim Legler and Kendrick Perkins.

New York claimed her too. McNutt became the Knicks’ primary radio analyst in 2023 and was the team’s radio voice through the franchise’s run to the 2026 NBA championship. Her range is what keeps her on so many shows. She can break down a pick-and-roll coverage on an NBA set, then give the WNBA the same serious, informed analysis in the next segment.

She is also willing to speak up. In 2024, as mainstream sports media rushed to cover the WNBA during Caitlin Clark’s rookie season, Monica McNutt openly questioned why so many outlets had ignored the league for years. The moment went viral and landed her on The Daily Show.

She kept that same energy this summer. In July 2026, McNutt pushed back on comments from Clark and called for accountability and self-awareness from the Fever star. Around the same time, Angel Reese publicly credited McNutt for the Black representation she brings to ESPN’s coverage.

Not every headline was friendly. During the NBA Finals, a hot mic caught McNutt questioning Taylor Swift’s Knicks fandom, and Swifties came for her hard. She cleared the air on The Breakfast Club. Then Jalen Brunson stepped in, asked fans to back off, and called McNutt “a really good one.”

A few weeks later, she joined SportsCenter live from a nail salon. The clip drew jokes online, and ESPN’s Mike Golic Jr. publicly backed her, pointing to his own unconventional SportsCenter appearance.

Away from the camera, Monica McNutt invests in the next generation. She supports Grow Our Game, a nonprofit that develops young girls through basketball, and she co-hosts the Jr. NBA Coaches Corner Podcast and the SALA Series Podcast. In August 2024, she married Justin Jackson.

She did not get a pro career. She did not get a shortcut. She got a master’s degree, worked local TV, and turned a college captain’s basketball IQ into a seat at the biggest desks in sports media. Now the girl from Suitland who once locked up Big East guards is the one being named the best in the studio.
