The Utah Department of Public Safety was helping the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources count sheep last week when they spotted a strange object below.

From a helicopter, the officers spotted a metal monolith in a remote area of red rock. The crew landed the aircraft at the site so that they could take a closer look.

“I’d say it’s probably between 10 and 12 feet high,” pilot Bret Hutchings told KSLTV. “We were kind of joking around that if one of us suddenly disappears, then the rest of us make a run for it.”

The crew said there was no indication how the monolith got to the location or who may have put it there.

The location of the monolith is being kept private because of how remote the site is. If individuals were tempted to go exploring, they could become stranded to the point of needing assistance.

Earlier this week, the bureau released an official statement to remind the public that it is illegal to use, occupy, or develop public lands without permission.
