Nelly had a swift response for a critic who took a jab at his relationship with Ashanti during an Instagram Live session. The three-time Grammy winner, who is expecting a child with Ashanti, addressed the negative comment head-on.
While livestreaming on Wednesday night, Nelly read aloud a comment that said, “He drunk as usual. It’s bedtime, poor Ashanti. He ghetto, coming on Live doing this. Shame on you.”
Nelly laughed and replied, “Coming on Live doing what? I can’t play music? Let me tell you something, shawty: She’s straight. And she encourages my happiness. That’s why we’re together—I encourage her. So whatever makes me happy, she kicks in. Whatever makes her happy, I kick in. So know that.”
He concluded, “So you ain’t gotta ‘poor her,’ it might be, ‘poor you.’ Get your shit together.”
It’s likely the commenter hadn’t seen Ashanti’s recent interview on Entertainment Tonight, where the R&B singer shared how their relationship has matured. Reflecting on their past, she mentioned how they’ve grown since their on-and-off relationship from the early 2000s to the mid-2010s.
“We are both at a place where like before, sometimes we would argue and walk out, slam the door, and not talk for a few days,” Ashanti told ET. “Now it’s kind of like, ‘All right, you good?’ You know, give me a kiss goodbye and it’s over…It’s not like holding on and bickering and we find out what the resolution is.”
