A new Netflix documentary is being released that takes us into the past of NFL star Aaron Hernandez, who was convicted of murder before his death. The documentary will be split into three parts.
The NFL star died in 2017 after hanging himself with a bedsheet in his prison cell at the age of 27.
Hernandez’s suicide came shortly after he was acquitted of double murder charges in the deaths of two men outside a nightclub in 2012.
Although he was acquitted of those murder charges, he was serving a life sentence fort he murder of Odin Lloyd in 2013, his fiancee’s sister’s boyfriend.
During the documentary, several phone calls are played between Hernandez and his mother. In several, he is confronting his mother and the role he felt she played in what went wrong in his life.
“I was the happiest little kid in the world and you f–ed me up,” he said to her in one recording.
“I ain’t living with that,” his mother replies.
“You did,” Hernandez says. “I had nobody. What’d you think I was going to do? Become a perfect angel?”
In several of the calls, Hernandez can be heard blaming his mother for different things, including not treating his ADHD.
“You ruined me,” he said to her. “You’re the reason I could never pay attention in school and sh-t. You were supposed to get me my medication.”
“I knocked you over the head with a frickin’ hammer,” she responded. “That was your medication.”
Jonathan Hernandez, Aaron’s older brother, interviewed with PEOPLE earlier last year, where he explained that Aaron was the victim of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.
The documentary will be available on Netflix on January 15.
