On Thursday, Netflix announced that in an attempt to prevent a recent wave of subscriber cancellations, it would begin offering a less expensive, ad-supported streaming option on Nov. 3 for $6.99 a month.

The streaming service currently provides ad-free packages that cost somewhere between $9.99 and $19.99.  In the US, the most popular service is $15.49.

According to Netflix, the new “Basic with Ads” plan will go live on November 3 with an average of 4 to 5 minutes of advertisements per hour, which will run both before and during the program.

Due to licensing restrictions, a limited number of movies and TV shows will not be available on the streaming service. The company did not specify which shows were restricted and said it was in the process of lifting them.

Additionally, users with the “Basic with Ads” plan will not be able to download any shows or movies.

The new ad-supported streaming plan will be offered in all 12 countries, including the US, the UK, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and Spain.

Netflix has decided to offer commercials after losing over 1 million subscribers earlier this year, which has more than 220 million subscribers worldwide.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Netflix is aiming to launch its ad-supported service ahead of competitor Disney+, which launches on Dec. 8 for $7.99.
