The Black Lives Matter Global Network has faced a wave of criticism in recent years, and even with fresh leadership, many continue to challenge the organization.
Cicley Gay was named chair of the foundation’s board of directors in April 2022. Since then, the road to revamping BLM has been difficult, with many outlets looking to discredit Gay by publishing distasteful stories about her and continuing to document the missteps of past BLM leaders. For this reason, Gay says the organization has taken several steps to reclaim public trust, such as building a strategic plan and establishing an online transparency center, which documents where BLM funds go. However, even with new measures in place, Gay says she has been the target of disturbing threats.
“I never thought I would be the target for the amount of accusations, hatred that I’ve received. And the worst part about it, I was ready for the white people. I was ready. I wasn’t ready for the Black people,” Gay stated during a recent interview with Streetz Morning Takeover.
BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors stepped down in May 2021 after launching the organization 2013, stating she wanted to focus on other projects. However, many attributed her exit to the mounting questions regarding her real estate purchases. She reportedly bought a $1.4 million home in Topanga Canyon and owned three additional homes, including a Georgia ranch.
