The new BMW 5-series sedan uses first-of-its-kind technology that allows drivers to switch lanes with just their eyes.
Known as “Active Lane Change Assistant,” this eye confirmation system allows for fewer hand motions when driving. The vehicle will suggest a lane change when necessary. Drivers will confirm the shift by looking at one of their exterior mirrors. After the car gets the eye approval, it will then take over steering and swap lanes on its own. A camera placed behind the steering wheel and directed at the driver helps the system function properly. Drivers will have the option to use the new Active Lane Change Assistant function at speeds up to 85 miles per hour.
What makes BMW’s system so unique is that the car is capable of identifying when a change is needed. Similar features allow cars to merge independently, but the driver must still request it first. Built-in sensors will detect whether or not there is enough free space in the other lane and will know if there are other cars approaching.
This new feature is also helpful during emergencies. If a driver has a medical issue that renders them unconscious while driving, the car will automatically come to a stop and turn on the hazard lights, alerting witnesses that someone needs help.
Additionally, drivers can enjoy automatic parking, which can be controlled in the car or by using their smartphone outside the vehicle. To park via this feature, drivers can not be more than 220 yards away.
Customers can expect the new BMW 5-series to arrive at BMW dealerships beginning in October 2023. The i5 eDrive40, which is the electric version, is priced at $68,800, while the gasoline-powered version, or i5 M60, starts at $85,750.
