An elderly man’s stimulus check was reportedly taken from his mailbox in New Caney, Texas, and deputies say it has been returned to him. The details come from a report by ABC 13.
According to the report, deputies with Montgomery County Precinct 4 came across a man walking through the Peach Creek Forest neighborhood around 10 p.m. on Wednesday. Officials say the 23 year old, identified by authorities as Jason, was searched and had two checks that did not belong to him, along with methamphetamine.
One of the checks was a federal stimulus payment for $1,200. The other was from Lone Star College. Deputies said Jason told them the stimulus check belonged to his cousin. Deputies then went to the address printed on the check and found the elderly man, who had been waiting for it to arrive.
“He had been looking for it. He said the suspect did not have permission to have it, so we were able to place him in custody for narcotics as well as stealing the elderly gentleman’s stimulus check,” Constable Rowdy Hayden told the station.
Jason is reportedly charged with a third degree felony in connection with the alleged theft, along with a drug possession charge. Those are allegations at this stage, and it was not clear from the report whether he had entered a plea or responded to the charges.
