Prosecutors in New Jersey have shared a text message from a 20 year old woman named Sarah, sent just before she met a man she had connected with online. The man, Khalil, 23, is on trial and is accused of killing three women and attempting to kill a fourth in 2016. His defense disputes that he is responsible.
According to prosecutors, Sarah was home in Montclair for the Thanksgiving break when she borrowed her mother’s van to meet Khalil on November 22, 2016. Before she left, she reportedly messaged him, “You’re not a serial killer, right?” Prosecutors say her body was found on December 1, 2016, in a nature reserve.
Prosecutors allege Sarah was the last of three women killed. The other two have been identified as Joanne and Robin. The North Jersey Record reported that prosecutors say Khalil searched online for information about harmful substances before the meeting.
The defense acknowledges Khalil was with each woman shortly before she disappeared but denies he is accountable for their deaths. His attorney argued that the women put themselves in vulnerable positions and pointed to the fact that Khalil cooperated with investigators, which the defense says is not the conduct of a guilty person.
Reports say Sarah’s family and friends went through her social media accounts and messages, which helped investigators connect her disappearance to the case. The trial is ongoing, and Khalil is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
