New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is seemingly pondering how to have Eric Adams removed from his New York City mayor position following his many controversies.

On Tuesday, she held meetings with top political figures, including U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and Rev. Al Sharpton, amid concerns over Adams’ ability to govern.

The Justice Department dropped its corruption case against Adams to facilitate his cooperation with Donald Trump’s immigration policies. However, the resignations of four key deputies raised “serious questions about the long-term future of this Mayoral administration,” Hochul said.

Sharpton revealed Hochul’s plans to “see what the judge decides tomorrow and keep deliberating with other leaders.” If Hochul proceeds with removal, Adams would face a legal process allowing him to defend himself. Another option is a “committee on inability” that could declare Adams unfit.

City Comptroller Brad Lander, challenging Adams in the June primary, said he would convene the panel unless Adams presented a governance plan by Friday. City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams opposed removal, arguing it should be reserved for incapacitated officials.

Adams has not addressed resignation calls. When asked why he hadn’t taken media questions in weeks, he snapped, “‘Cause y’all liars.”

His troubles began in November 2023 when his phones were seized in a federal fundraising probe. Later indicted for bribery, he denied wrongdoing. Recently, Adams strengthened ties with Trump, who hinted at a pardon. Adams defended his actions, stating he was prioritizing the city’s interests, not his own.
