A New York Attorney General has added “criminal capacity” to the investigation into Donald Trump‘s organization.
On Tuesday, New York Attorney General Letitia James‘ office announced that she would be joining the Manhattan district attorney’s office in the criminal investigation of the Trump Organization. CNN reports that the probe into Trump and his organization has been going on since 2019 and will continue as a civil probe. However, this will be the first time that the Trump Organization that a criminal portion will be a part of the probe.
“We have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into the organization is no longer purely civil in nature. We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA,” James’ spokesman Fabien Levy told CNN. “We have no additional comment.”
The investigation will examine whether the Trump Organization misled lenders and insurance companies about the value of properties and whether they paid the appropriate taxes. If any criminal actions are found, Trump could be held accountable. On Wednesday, Trump called the probe of his company “corrupt.”
“There is nothing more corrupt than an investigation that is in desperate search of a crime. But, make no mistake, that is exactly what is happening here,” he said in a lengthy statement.
