A newborn baby, only one hour old, was placed in a Safe Haven box at Seymour Fire Station Three in Seymour, Indiana. Fortunately, the baby was retrieved by firefighters within 60 seconds.
Moments after the infant was placed in the temperature-controlled baby box, firefighters took her out and began giving her medical care. The baby was transported to a local hospital for further care.
The baby girl is the first child to be left in Seymour’s safe haven baby box since it was installed in June. Across Indiana, five infants have been placed in the boxes over the last two years. According to CNN, the boxes give parents a way to anonymously surrender their child without judgment or penalty.
“Our baby box is a last resort option for moms. We want them to choose a parenting plan,” Kelsey said. “We want them to choose an adoption plan. But if they can’t do those, we don’t want a baby in a dumpster.”
Hunter Wart is the 19-year-old responsible for the project, raising $10,000 by mowing lawns and scrapping metal to have the baby box installed. Hunter said, “I am glad that she is safe…I was just excited that it had been used and the mother surrendered her child safely.”
