NFL Owners Reportedly Want to Force Jerry Jones To Forfeit the Cowboys Amid Roger Goodell Contract Extension Drama

As Jerry Jones works to halt Roger Goodell’s contract extension as commissioner, other owners are reportedly working against him, discussing the idea of ousting the owner from the Dallas Cowboys.

On Sunday, a source told Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, “Multiple owners already have been discussing the possibility, which flows from Article VIII of the NFL’s Constitution and Bylaws.”

Although the move could lead to a legal battle with Jones, who is already threatening litigation if Goodell’s contract is extended, an owner’s ousting is allowed if the owner “has been or is guilty of conduct detrimental to the welfare of the league or professional football.” According to Bleacher Report, if a $500,000 fine does not seem “adequate or sufficient,” a forced forfeiture is a possibility.

Apparently, NFL owners’ move to consider forcing Jones out of the Owners club comes after the Papa John’s controversy, in which many believe Jones encouraged the pizza owner to call out the NFL and blame the protests for its decline in revenue. According to reports, Jones and the Dallas Cowboys have been the subject of increased media attention, surrounding Ezekiel Elliott’s legal battle, as well as Jones’ harsh public criticism of the player’s protests of police brutality and racial injustices.
