Nia Long says the dating pool can keep the confusion because she is only entertaining intention these days.

The “Michael” actress stopped by the April 21 episode of “Baby, This Is Keke Palmer” and gave an honest update on love, standards, and why casual dating still feels foreign to her. Long, who split from former fiancé and Houston Rockets coach Ime Udoka in 2022, said life experience has made her clearer about what she expects from anyone entering her space now.
While talking with Keke Palmer, Long laughed about modern romance before calling dating “stupid” and “so dumb.” She then explained that effort matters more than grand promises.
“I want flowers sent to my house. I need you to show consistent effort. I need you to show me that I need you,” Long said.
The actress shared that she has known real love before, which is why she can quickly tell when something is meaningful and when it is just temporary entertainment. That perspective, she said, has changed how she approaches relationships.
“I’ve experienced good love” throughout her life, Long explained, saying it helps her recognize the difference between a genuine bond and “playtime.”
Even so, she admitted she may need to become more comfortable with lighter dating experiences instead of jumping straight into commitment.
“But what I do think I need to do more of is engage in playtime,” she admitted. “‘Cause I’ve always been in a relationship. I’ve always been like, ‘Oh, you like me. I like you. Okay, now we’re a thing.’ And then five years later and you’re like, Oh, whoa. But I don’t really know how to casually date.”
The conversation got even funnier when the topic turned to privacy. Long repeated a joke she previously made about hookups needing paperwork before anything happens.
“People talk too much. I need them to shut up. If we’re going to have a one-night stand, I almost feel like I need to have them sign NDAs,” she said.
For now, Long seems unbothered, self-aware, and fully committed to making effort the new entry fee.
