Blacc Sam Turned Down Millions For Nipsey Hussle’s Documentary, Here’s Why He Wants Fans To Watch For Free

Nipsey Hussle’s family has spent years protecting the way his story will be told, and Blacc Sam says that commitment is worth more than the multimillion dollar offers that have come with the rapper’s long awaited documentary.

During an August 2026 appearance on The Breakfast Club, Samiel “Blacc Sam” Asghedom revealed that the Nipsey Hussle documentary has grown into a much larger series than originally planned. Sam said the project is being developed as roughly eight or nine episodes and that the family plans to make it available for free instead of handing the story over simply because a company is willing to pay the highest price.

Sam made the reason clear while discussing the offers the family has received.

“It was upwards of 20, high 20s [million]…and it’s not a money play,” he firmly stated.

According to The Breakfast Club interview, Sam said Netflix and Disney’s Onyx Collective were among the companies involved in discussions surrounding the project. He explained that major money was on the table, but maintaining control over Nipsey’s life story remained the priority. A summary of the interview also records Sam saying, “There’s no level of money that can be presented to have us walk away.”

That position fits the larger philosophy behind the Nipsey Hussle documentary. Rather than reducing his life to his death, commercial success or celebrity relationships, the family has repeatedly described the series as an attempt to document the full journey.

In December 2025, director One9 told Variety that Nipsey and his family had accumulated an unusually deep archive of footage. One9 said Nipsey documented his life extensively, while his father also filmed him when he was young. The footage allows the series to trace his development from childhood through gang life, independence, music, business, and his emergence as an influential figure in Crenshaw. The project is also expected to include previously unreleased music and narration built from Nipsey’s own recorded voice.

Sam provided even more detail on The Breakfast Club, saying viewers will see footage stretching from Nipsey learning how to make beats as a child all the way through becoming a Grammy-nominated artist. That makes the project less like a conventional celebrity retrospective and more like an archive of how Ermias Asghedom became Nipsey Hussle.

Earlier plans also show how much the project has evolved. In 2022, Vanity Fair reported that Marathon Films was working with LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s SpringHill Company on the series, with more than 50 interviews planned involving Nipsey’s relatives, friends and collaborators. Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg were among the artists reported as participants. At the time, the family said it had deliberately taken its time to make sure Nipsey’s story was presented accurately.

Now another major filmmaker is involved. Sam revealed during his 2026 Breakfast Club appearance that Allen Hughes has joined the Nipsey Hussle documentary after previously being unavailable. Sam said Hughes reviewed the footage and immediately understood what the family was trying to build. Hughes previously directed the acclaimed Tupac Shakur docuseries “Dear Mama,” making his addition especially notable for a project built around archival material and a complicated cultural legacy. According to Sam, the timing finally allows the team to finish the documentary the way it wants.

Nipsey also left behind a standard for anyone attempting to tell his life story. When the docuseries was formally announced in 2022, Blacc Sam recalled Nipsey saying, “If they made a story about my life, it better be a classic.” Vanity Fair reported the quote as part of the family’s statement explaining why they were taking such care with the production.

That quote carries even more weight as the project gets closer to the public. The decision to release the documentary for free is not being framed by his family as a lack of commercial value. Sam’s account suggests the opposite. Companies were prepared to pay tens of millions for access to the story.

For Blacc Sam, the bigger value appears to be making sure Nipsey’s story remains accessible, detailed, and controlled by the people who knew him best.
