Terrell Owens Calls For Trump To Intervene In Nolan Wells Case: “You Should Be Making The Call Right Now”

The Nolan Wells case has prompted an emotional public appeal from Terrell Owens, who is asking Trump to use his influence to help the family of the 18-year-old college football player obtain answers about his death. According to Owens on Instagram, the Pro Football Hall of Fame receiver directly compared the unresolved Mississippi investigation with Trump’s recent intervention in a controversial World Cup disciplinary decision.

“If you can make a call to overturn a call for a soccer match then you can make a call for the JUSTICE of Nolan Wells,” Owens wrote alongside his July 16 video. He also urged Trump to “DO THE RIGHT THING!” According to his post, his message extended beyond one family and reflected broader frustration with how Black families are forced to fight for transparency after a loved one dies under unclear circumstances.

“The justice system, it’s failing us,” Owens said in the video. He explained that he was “speaking from the heart” and suggested that remaining silent was no longer an option. Owens did not claim to have new evidence about what happened to Wells. His statement was instead a demand for greater urgency, visibility and accountability as local investigators continue collecting evidence.

The soccer controversy Owens referenced involved United States forward Folarin Balogun during the 2026 World Cup. According to Reuters, Trump personally contacted FIFA chief Gianni Infantino after Balogun received a red card during the United States’ match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. FIFA later suspended the automatic one game ban, allowing Balogun to play against Belgium. FIFA maintained that its disciplinary process was independent and denied that the calls influenced the outcome.

That distinction matters. Owens described the episode as Trump helping overturn a soccer call, while available reporting shows that Trump requested a review and FIFA subsequently suspended the punishment. Still, the rapid sequence of events gave Owens a clear comparison. In his view, the Nolan Wells case deserves at least the same level of powerful attention as a disputed decision in a sporting event.

According to WLOX, Wells traveled to Horn Island with friends on July 4. He was last seen on the island that afternoon, but the group he initially traveled with eventually returned without him. His mother reported him missing shortly after midnight on July 5, and an extensive search followed. A park ranger found his body in the water near the northwestern end of Horn Island on July 6. Dental records later confirmed his identity.

Horn Island is an uninhabited barrier island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast that can only be reached by boat. According to The Associated Press, nearly 200 people were reportedly present for the July 4 gathering, and Wells appeared to be one of only a few Black attendees shown in available photographs and videos.

Wells was preparing to return to Southwest Mississippi Community College, where he played wide receiver. According to his official profile with Southwest Mississippi Community College Athletics, the Ocean Springs native wore number 16, studied general business and was listed at 6 feet 1 inch and 185 pounds. According to WLOX, he was preparing to begin his second season with the program.

Friends described Wells as a calm and caring young man who loved sports. According to the Sun Herald, childhood friends remembered him as someone who could “spark up a whole room” and often tried to settle disagreements rather than contribute to them. They also said Wells knew how to swim, which has added to his family’s questions about the initial belief that he drowned.

Major questions in the case center on why he did not leave Horn Island with the same group and how his phone and keys returned without him. Witnesses have provided conflicting accounts about whether Wells intentionally stayed to speak with a young woman or expected to leave with his friends. His parents have said separating from the group would have been out of character for their son.

The phone has become another major focus. Wells’ family located the device at a friend’s home using a tracking application. The family alleged that messages appeared to have been erased and said the lack of recent Snapchat activity seemed unusual because Wells regularly used the platform. No public finding has established that anyone intentionally deleted evidence. The family’s legal team and local prosecutors have now agreed to conduct a mutual inspection of the device.

Authorities initially said they did not suspect foul play and indicated that drowning was a possibility. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office also stressed that investigators were still working to determine exactly what happened. The official cause and manner of death had not been publicly announced as of July 16, and results from a separate autopsy arranged by the family also remained pending.

Investigators have interviewed more than 60 witnesses. The FBI is assisting with the examination of digital evidence and addressing interstate threats reportedly made against people connected to the case. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office remains the agency leading the death investigation.

The Wells family is represented by civil rights attorney Ben Crump. District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath committed to presenting the investigation to a grand jury once the sheriff’s work is complete. A grand jury would review the evidence and determine whether there is sufficient cause for criminal charges. The commitment does not mean that investigators have concluded a crime occurred or identified a suspect.

“The hope is when this is presented to the grand jury, all relevant witnesses and evidence will be presented to them, so we can have a fair and impartial investigation into the death of Nolan Wells,” Crump said. He added, “Our lived experiences tell us that we must question everything, everybody’s role, law enforcement’s role. That is the lived experience as Black people in America.”

The situation has also received support from prominent Black public figures. Tyler Perry is assisting with funeral expenses, Colin Kaepernick is helping fund the independent autopsy and Spike Lee attended a news conference supporting the family. The Congressional Black Caucus has also called for an independent investigation.

Owens’ appeal does not change which agencies have legal authority over the investigation, but it increases pressure on officials to conduct a process the public can understand and the family can trust. His message also captures the painful imbalance many Black families describe when they must generate national attention before their questions receive sustained scrutiny.

For Wells’ parents, the immediate demand remains simple. They want verified evidence, completed autopsy findings, a full examination of their son’s phone and a reliable account of the final hours before he was found dead. Until those pieces are evaluated and made clear, the suspicious incident remains an urgent search for facts rather than a story with a settled conclusion.
