Two people have been arrested in connection with the theft of a chair that belonged to Jefferson Davis from an Alabama cemetery. Davis was president of the Confederate States during its existence from 1861 to 1865.
According to CNN, the New Orleans Police Department announced in a news release that Stanley and Kathryn were arrested and charged with possession of stolen property. Police said they are also looking for a third person in connection with the theft.
The concrete chair disappeared in March from Old Live Oak Cemetery in Selma, Alabama. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office asked New Orleans police for help recovering it, and the chair was estimated to be worth about $500,000. Police said they received a tip about its whereabouts and located it Thursday.
Stanley and Kathryn are free on bail. Their attorneys told CNN that the two are small business owners and community members who deny any connection to the theft. The attorneys said they believe their clients are victims of mistakes of fact and look forward to clearing their names.
