Stores in North Carolina have had approximately $170,000 worth of candy and snacks infused with THC confiscated and taken off the shelves.
In a press release, the North Carolina Secretary of State revealed that they spearheaded an operation in eastern North Carolina, resulting in the confiscation of edible products from vape shops. These products were found to be packaged using counterfeit branding of popular snack brands such as Skittles, Airheads, and Oreos.
Officials emphasized that even though the packaging of these edibles featured markings indicating their THC content, they still had the potential to be misleading and go unnoticed by children and teenagers.
“These THC-infused edibles are packaged using counterfeit snack brands that are particularly popular with children and teenagers,” North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall said. “This growing trend is dangerous for our communities, and it’s important to raise the overall awareness of this issue with parents and all residents around North Carolina.”
He added, “Halloween is a time when our children are consuming more candy and sweets. So it’s particularly important if parents have THC-infused products in their homes to lock them away like other medications or cleaning products.”
Authorities reported that a significant amount of THC-infused candy and snacks were discovered in vape and tobacco shops situated in close proximity to high schools or colleges. Subsequent to the investigation, several illegal weapons and other illicit drugs were confiscated. The Secretary of State further disclosed that one individual had been arrested on felony drug charges in connection with the operation.
