Two parents were shot and killed in a Charlotte, North Carolina parking lot while their 4 year old son sat in the back seat, and police have since made an arrest, according to PEOPLE.
Charlotte Mecklenburg police responded to the parking lot on Monday just after noon and found a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds, PEOPLE reported. Dondrake, 26, died at the scene. Jakailah, 27, was taken to a hospital, where she died from her injuries. Their son was not hurt.
Police arrested a man identified as Xaveon the day before Dondrake’s birthday. According to online jail records cited by PEOPLE, he was charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted first degree murder, along with other charges. It was not clear whether he had entered a plea or hired an attorney. A charge is an accusation, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Police said tips from the couple’s community helped them find the suspect. Maj. Cecil Brisbon told a local station that a shooting in broad daylight “seems to be pretty brazen.”
Dondrake’s family started a GoFundMe page to cover funeral and burial costs, with any extra money going to his children, PEOPLE reported. He also has another son from a previous relationship. Loved ones described him as a caring father, son and brother who looked after his brother.
