Garrett Rolfe wants his job back

The Atlanta Civil Service Board has reinstated Atlanta Police officer Garrett Rolfe, charged in the fatal shooting of Rayshard Brooks.

“Due to the City’s failure to comply with several provisions of the Code and the information received during witnesses’ testimony, the Board concludes the Appellant was not afforded his right to due process,” the board said. “Therefore, the Board grants the Appeal of Garrett Rolfe and revokes his dismissal as an employee of the APD.”

Despite his reinstatement, Rolfe still faces murder and aggravated assault charges for the June 12 shooting. In addition, the reinstatement does not mean Rolfe will be returning to the force, as his bond forbids him from owning weapons or being around other cops. According to his attorney, he will “essentially be on administrative leave pending the outcome of the charges against them.”

Rolfe was fired one day after he shot Brooks in a Wendy’s parking lot. His killing led to a new round of demonstrations across the country, including in Atlanta, where the Wendy’s where the shooting took place was set on fire.

Rolfe is currently out on a $500,000 bond. He must wear an ankle monitor, abide by a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew, surrender his passport, not possess firearms, not contact Brooks’ family or witnesses, and have no contact with police.
