An Oklahoma middle school teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave after a 7th grade student said she called his Black King shirt racist in class.
According to KFOR, Edmond Public Schools administrators met with the Heartland Middle School teacher on February 25 about the complaint. The district has not said whether any disciplinary action will be taken.
“Edmond Public Schools district administrators met this afternoon with a Heartland Middle School teacher at the center of a complaint,” Susan Parks Schlepp, the district’s director of communications, said in a statement.
“The district recognizes the public’s desire for a quick resolution to this issue. However, it’s important to note that employees have fundamental rights to ensure fairness when they are the subject of a complaint. Those rights include an option for the teacher to respond to and contest any recommended disciplinary action,” she continued.
The student’s family says he was given the shirt as a birthday present. It includes an outline of Africa. The family says the teacher stopped class to question the shirt and called it racist. The teacher has not been identified in the district’s statement, and Baller Alert has not seen a public response from her.
