One-Hit Wonders Who Still Have Us In a Chokehold Today

Although one-hit wonders may have seen their mainstream run end relatively quickly, the impacts they left behind with their singles continue to live on.

By definition, a one-hit wonder is “a group or singer that has only one hit record.” These figures have oftentimes gotten a bad reputation, though their impact should not be understated.  One massive track is all it takes to put an artist on the map in the ever-evolving worlds of hip-hop and R&B.  Even if they only deliver one smash in their careers, these musicians often create songs that define eras, sparking cultural movements and cementing themselves in fans’ playlists for years to come.

One such anthem is Blu Cantrell’s “Hit’ Em Up Style,” released in 2001.  This served as Cantrell’s only record to break the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number two.  The track was the lead single from her “So Blu” album, which went gold.  However, she hasn’t had any other notable records as big as “Hit’ Em Up Style,” its legacy lives on.

Whether at a party or on a throwback playlist, these one-hit wonders continue to provide a fair share of nostalgia.

Mark Morrison – “Return of the Mack”
