Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes was arrested on October 31 in Maui, Hawaii, and charged with abuse of a family or household member, according to a Maui Police Department report released in November.
Police said Reyes and his wife, Katherine, were arguing in their hotel room at a Four Seasons resort when the argument turned physical and resulted in injuries. Katherine was treated by medics and taken to a hospital. Hawaii News Now, citing unnamed sources, reported that she told police Reyes grabbed her by the throat and shoved her into a sliding glass door, and that she had injuries to her side, neck and wrist.
Reyes was released on a $1,000 bond and ordered not to contact his wife for three days. The case was forwarded to the Maui County prosecutor’s office. A charge is an allegation and Reyes has not been convicted of anything. A comment from Reyes was not included in the early reports.
The Rockies said they were extremely disappointed and concerned by the allegations and would address the matter under Major League Baseball’s joint domestic violence policy. MLB said the commissioner’s office had opened its own investigation and that no discipline had been announced yet.
