A tweet about a video game turned into a compliance moment for Oklahoma defensive back Kass Everett. On September 17, 2013, Everett tweeted that he could not afford the new Grand Theft Auto and shared a photo, according to Bleacher Report.
Former Oklahoma safety Tony Jefferson, then playing for the Arizona Cardinals, jokingly offered to buy the game for him. Jefferson also noted that compliance rules would not allow it. The University of Oklahoma compliance office then responded on Twitter the same morning, a quick reminder that gifts from former players can run into NCAA rules about outside benefits.
The next day, Everett tweeted that he did not know people had made a deal out of his Grand Theft Auto V tweet. He said he knows the rules and follows them.
The lesson for college athletes everywhere is simple. Social media is public, and your school is watching.
