Back in July, Oprah Winfrey’s OWN ordered a second season of its romantic drama Love Is, created by and based on the real life relationship of the married production duo Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil.
According to Deadline, the renewal came after the show ranked first on cable in its time slot, with 1.2 million viewers and a 1.2 rating among women, per OWN and Nielsen. Now, sources tell LoveBScott that the network has decided to end the series. OWN had not publicly confirmed the report at the time of this post.
The sources say the decision is connected, at least in part, to a lawsuit filed against Salim in November. In that state court case, Amber, an actress and screenwriter, claims she had a long relationship with Salim that included physical abuse and sexual assault. She also made a breach of implied contract claim. Salim has denied the allegations.
In a separate federal lawsuit, Amber accused Salim, Mara and OWN of using her story for Love Is. She has since put that copyright case on hold. Her attorney, Joseph Costa, told The Blast that in light of Salim’s denial, she decided to place all of her focus on the state court case, and that the federal case is on hold “without prejudice to refile.”
These are claims made in court filings, and none of them has been decided by a judge or jury. Baller Alert will update you as official word comes in.
