With the season nearly wrapped and little left to play for, the Dallas Cowboys hit the reset button in a major way. The team has released two time Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs with one game remaining on the schedule, according to ESPN. Diggs, 27, will be placed on waivers and could become a free agent if he clears. Dallas closes its season Sunday against the New York Giants.
The move brings an abrupt end to a rocky stretch between Diggs and the organization. One source described the decision as being tied “to a culmination of events, including performance.”
After signing a five year, $97 million extension in 2023, Diggs struggled to stay on the field. Knee injuries limited him to just 21 games over the past two seasons. He suffered a torn ACL in 2023, followed by a chondral graft procedure that sidelined him again last year. This season, a right knee issue kept him out eight games, along with a concussion from an at home accident he later explained happened while installing a television mount.
Dallas also took issue with Diggs’ rehab approach. The team enforced a $500,000 salary de escalator for 2025 after he skipped most of the voluntary offseason program, opting to rehab in South Florida rather than with team staff.
On the field, production dipped sharply. In eight appearances, Diggs totaled 27 tackles with no interceptions or pass breakups, a stark contrast to earlier seasons that included 11 picks in 2021 and a first team All Pro nod.
With DaRon Bland already on injured reserve, Dallas now turns to a young, unproven cornerback group as it looks ahead to an offseason full of questions.
