Malcolm-Jamal Warner's Mother Says She Offered His Widow Millions Before Estate Battle Went Public

Pamela Warner is done letting her son’s widow control the narrative in a bitter estate fight that has now spread across two state courts. According to TMZ, Pamela Warner filed new court documents pushing back on claims from Tenisha Warner, who has accused her mother in law of mishandling the trust left behind by “The Cosby Show” star Malcolm-Jamal Warner.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner spent more than four decades in entertainment after breaking out as Theo Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” a role that made him one of the most recognizable young actors of the eighties. He went on to star in “Malcolm and Eddie,” “Reed Between the Lines,” “Suits,” and “The Resident,” while building a second career as a poet and jazz bassist with his band Miles Long. In 2015, he won a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance for his work on Robert Glasper’s cover of “Jesus Children of America,” alongside Lalah Hathaway, and he picked up a spoken word Grammy nomination in 2023 for his album “Hiding In Plain View.”

The actor drowned off the coast of Costa Rica on July 20, 2025, after a current pulled him into the ocean. He was fifty-four. His mother, Pamela Warner, who also managed his career for years, later opened up publicly about the grief of losing him, telling “Good Morning America” the news hit her so hard that neighbors came running when she screamed.

More than a year later, that grief has turned into a courtroom battle. Tenisha Warner, who married Malcolm-Jamal Warner in May 2022 and shares his young daughter, filed suit against Pamela Warner in DeKalb County Superior Court in Georgia. Tenisha Warner claims her husband agreed in their prenuptial agreement to purchase and maintain a one-million-dollar life insurance policy naming her as sole beneficiary, but he never took the policy out before he died. The suit also claims she is owed close to one million two hundred thousand dollars for years spent working as her husband’s chief of staff and assistant, along with interest and legal fees.

In a statement provided to CNN through her attorney, Tenisha Warner said she “attempted to privately settle my beloved husband’s complicated estate” before turning to the courts, describing herself as a single mother trying to protect her daughter’s future once a legal deadline was approaching.

Pamela Warner is now telling a very different version of events. According to the new filing obtained by TMZ, Pamela Warner disputes the idea that she stonewalled Tenisha Warner or tried to keep her from what she was owed. She says she reached out privately and proposed a settlement that included a two million dollar life insurance policy, a separate Georgia-based trust Malcolm-Jamal Warner had used to buy a home for his wife and daughter, and a retirement account worth roughly two million four hundred thousand dollars, all earmarked for Tenisha Warner and the couple’s daughter, Mackenzie. Pamela Warner claims she was willing to take only a one-time payment for herself and let the rest go to Mackenzie.

Pamela Warner alleges Tenisha Warner turned down that offer and filed suit instead. She says she then worked out a separate settlement directly with the court-appointed guardian representing Mackenzie’s interests, and she is now asking the court to approve that agreement while pushing to have Tenisha Warner’s Georgia lawsuit thrown out entirely.

Pamela Warner has framed her position as bigger than a dispute between two grieving women. She argues her decades-long role as her son’s manager, and the closeness of their relationship, are exactly why Malcolm-Jamal Warner intended for her to receive a share of his estate. Pamela Warner has served as trustee of the Warner Family Trust since it was created in 1996, according to a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

With one lawsuit still active in Georgia and a competing settlement now sitting before a separate court, the fight between Pamela Warner and Tenisha Warner is far from over. For a family already grieving one of television’s most beloved sons, the courtroom has become the latest, and most painful, stage of that story.
