Palm Beach International Airport’s name change to Trump is officially on the table after Florida lawmakers voted to move the proposal forward. The Florida House approved a bill in an 81 to 30 vote that would rename Palm Beach International Airport to Donald J. Trump International Airport.
The proposal now heads to the Florida Senate. If it passes there, it would then go to Governor Ron DeSantis for a signature. After that, federal approval would still be required because the airport operates under Federal Aviation Administration oversight.
Supporters of the Florida airport renaming bill pointed to Trump’s residence in Palm Beach and his long-standing political ties to the state. They framed the proposal as recognition of his influence and connection to Florida. However, several lawmakers voted against the measure and raised concerns during debate. They questioned whether naming a major public airport after a sitting president could deepen political divisions. Others argued that public infrastructure should remain separate from active political leadership.
The renaming is not automatic. Even if the legislation becomes law, Palm Beach County and federal aviation officials would still need to coordinate before any signage changes happen. That process would include updating airport branding, systems, and public materials.
At the same time, public trademark records show that the Trump Organization filed applications tied to variations of the proposed name, including Donald J. Trump International Airport and related initials. According to statements from the organization, the Trump Organization trademark filings are meant to protect the name from misuse.
The organization has stated that Trump would not personally profit from the airport’s renaming itself. Still, the filings have added another layer to the conversation because airports are typically controlled by public agencies rather than private companies connected to the honoree.
The projected cost of the Florida airport renaming bill is roughly $5.5 million. That estimate includes new signage, uniforms, logo updates, and technology changes across airport operations. Palm Beach International Airport serves millions of travelers each year. So if the Palm Beach International Airport’s renaming becomes official, the impact would be visible far beyond Florida.
For now, the airport’s name remains the same. But the legislative push to create Donald J. Trump International Airport is active and moving. The debate is no longer hypothetical. Lawmakers have made their position clear, and the final decision now rests with the remaining votes and approvals.
