Second Parkland Shooting Survivor Commits Suicide

The families of the 2018 Parkland, Florida school shooting victims have reached a $25 million settlement with the district.

According to the families’ attorney, 52 families will receive a lump sum payment from the Broward County school district. Their lawyer, David Brill, did not confirm how much each family would receive. Still, the families of the three school staff members and 14 students that were killed would be entitled to the largest share.

“This settlement is fair and remarkable given the circumstances,” Brill said. However, he acknowledged that there is “nowhere near enough money to compensate the victims. Indeed, there isn’t enough money in existence to do that.”

Brill told the South Florida-Sun Sentinel that it is still being drafted although the settlement has been reached.

The school district is being accused of negligence by the victims’ families for failing to keep the gunman of the Marjory Stone Douglas High School campus. Nikolas Cruz gained entry to school grounds, shooting and killing 17 and injuring 17 others.

According to his attorneys, Cruz, 23, is set to plead guilty on Wednesday to 17 counts of first-degree murder and 17 counts of attempted murder. He is facing either the death penalty or life in prison without parole.
