Sir Paul McCartney is backing up claims that the Chinese wet markets that sell freshly slaughtered animals are to blame for the coronavirus pandemic.

Many believe that coronavirus began from humans eating bats, and The Beatles star explained those theories to Howard Stern on his hit SiriusXM show.

“I really hope that this will mean the Chinese government says, ‘Okay guys, we have really got to get super hygienic around here.’ Let’s face it; it is a little bit medieval eating bats,” McCartney, a proud animal lover, said. In response, Stern said: “They will not close down these wet markets, that got us into this trouble in the first place. It’s mind-boggling, right?”

“It wouldn’t be so bad if this is the only thing it seems like you can blame on those wet markets,” McCartney added. “It seems like Sars, avian flu, all sorts of other stuff that has afflicted us … and what’s it for? For these quite medieval practices. They need to clean up their act. This may lead to [change]. If this doesn’t, I don’t know what will.”

McCartney then suggested he would gladly lead the efforts to call for the wet markets to be shut down.

“It’s not a stupid idea; it is a very good idea,” he said. “They don’t need all the people dying. And what’s it for? All these medieval practices. They just need to clean up their act. This may lead to it. If this doesn’t, I don’t know what will.”

McCartney added, “They might as well be letting off atomic bombs because it’s affecting the whole world. Whoever is responsible for this is at war with the world and itself.”

However, he said that he knows it would be difficult to shut the wet markets down, considering they’ve been around for years, but added: “They did slavery forever too, but you have to change things at some point.”
