A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Houston Police Department vehicle that was engaged in a high-speed chase with a reportedly stolen vehicle.

The incident began when a woman called to report her truck had been stolen around 5 p.m. on Saturday. She was held at gunpoint, and five suspects fled in her Ford Truck.

The truck was equipped with a tracking device, and police were able to use it to find its location. Upon locating the car, the vehicle took off, and the officers chased it. Two officers that attempted to assist in the pursuit lost control of their vehicle and struck a pedestrian.

“As they were coming westbound on Reed Road, somehow they lost control of their vehicle,” said Houston Police Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite. “We know they left the roadway, onto the sidewalk, and ended up here.”

The officers attempted CPR on the victim, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police describe the unidentified victim as “a 45-to-50-year-old African American male.”

The police officers involved in the fatal crash were 25-years-old and had been with the department for less than two years. Both of the officers have been placed on administrative leave while HPD and the District Attorney’s Office investigate.

Three of the five suspects involved were arrested at a nearby apartment complex. Two of the suspects fled on foot.

Check out surveillance footage of the chase obtained by ABC13 below.
