A Pennsylvania postal worker named Richard has recanted a claim that a postmaster told him to backdate ballots mailed after Election Day, according to The Washington Post, as relayed by Yahoo News and The Grio.
Richard’s original claim spread quickly among Republican officials. Sen. Lindsey Graham sent a letter to the Justice Department asking for a federal investigation, and Attorney General William Barr then authorized federal prosecutors to look into the allegations, the outlets reported. Barr’s move drew pushback from Democrats and some department officials, who noted that the Justice Department has a long standing policy against investigating voter fraud claims until election results are in and certified, according to The Grio.
According to the Post, Richard took back his claim on Monday in an affidavit after speaking with investigators from the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General. Democrats on the House Oversight Committee tweeted that the whistleblower had completely recanted.
His postmaster, Rob, had maintained that the claims were “100 percent false.” Why Richard made the original claim has not been confirmed. A GoFundMe page created for him, which described the money as help in case he was wrongfully terminated or forced to resign, reportedly raised more than $136,000.
