A Philadelphia teenager faces a tough decision on where to attend college in the fall after earning over $1 million in scholarship money from nearly twenty schools.
Good Morning America reports that Shanya Robinson-Owens, 17, applied to 20 schools. So far, she has been accepted to 18 of them and offered $1,074,260 in total scholarships.
“We are overjoyed,” her aunt, Christine Owens, told the outlet. “I knew she wouldn’t have a problem getting into colleges, but we didn’t know they would award her this much money in scholarship funds.”
She currently a senior at George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Science. Robinson-Owens graduates from high school in June and is still deciding exactly where she will be attending school in the fall.
Some of the schools that Robinson-Owens was accepted to are Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; La Salle University in Philadelphia; Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri; Temple University in Philadelphia and Cabrini University in Radnor, Pennsylvania, and more.
“I was pretty excited,” Robinson-Owens told GMA. “I wasn’t really expecting it.”
She currently had a 3.2-grade point average, and her favorite subject in school is chemistry. She’s also involved in a journalism class, the school’s yearbook committee, and interns for her Chinese teacher grading papers. Robinson-Owens says she hopes to continue studying Chinese in the future and plans to study psychology at whatever college she decides on.
Her advice to fellow students? “You really have to be patient. Stay focused. If you need to have some time away, it’s OK. You can tell your teachers that because they know you’re stressed.”
