A South Florida veterinarian has been arrested on federal charges of possessing child pornography and sexually abusing an animal, according to the Miami Herald and local reports.
Dr. Prentiss, who worked at Caring Hands Animal Hospital in Aventura, was arrested Tuesday following a federal investigation. The Herald reports that a tip led investigators to search his home in February. Authorities allege they found illegal material there. It was not clear whether the animal involved was connected to the clinic where he worked.
The clinic manager said in a statement that he was fired after the clinic learned of the allegations, calling them heinous. The clinic said it will help law enforcement with the investigation and prosecution. Clients and colleagues told reporters they were shocked, with one rescue volunteer describing him as a caring doctor who offered discounts to her organization.
He was scheduled to appear in federal court Wednesday. The charges are allegations, he has not been convicted of any crime, and a response from him was not immediately available.
