The Portland Police Bureau said this week that it is looking for a man identified as Marquise, 25, in connection with a violent assault on a truck driver in downtown Portland on Sunday night.
According to a police press release, investigators have made several attempts to reach the suspect without success. Police said they have probable cause for his arrest. Police also asked the public not to contact the man, noting that information shared on social media is not always accurate. Baller Alert was unable to reach him for comment, and no response from him had been reported.
Police said officers responded just before 10:30 p.m. on August 16 after a 911 caller reported that a group had chased a white Ford truck that then crashed near Southwest Taylor Street and Broadway. The caller said the driver was pulled from the vehicle. Another caller told dispatchers that nine or ten people attacked him.
When officers arrived, they found the driver unconscious and injured. He was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life threatening and has since been released to recover at home.
Police later learned of a video circulating online that showed what led up to the attack. According to the bureau, investigators learned the driver may have been trying to help a transgender woman who had belongings stolen near Southwest Taylor Street and 4th Avenue, where the incident began. Police said they hope to speak with her.
Chief Chuck Lovell said in the release that the bureau is taking this assault and other violence seriously. He said detectives are also investigating violence directed at protesters, but that investigators need more than social media videos. He asked the public to share information and to avoid tampering with evidence.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Portland Police Bureau.
