Dominican police say a Texas man has been arrested in connection with the shooting of former baseball player David Ortiz.
Ortiz, known as “Big Papi,” was shot at a bar in the Dominican Republic on June 9 in what authorities describe as a case of mistaken identity. Police announced Friday that they arrested Victor, a resident of Katy, Texas, whom officials describe as an associate of Mexico’s Gulf Cartel. Officials say Victor hired hitmen to kill his cousin, Sixto, whom he suspected of turning him in to investigators back in 2011.
The National Police tweeted that Victor was “one of the masterminds of the attack that injured the former baseball player David Ortiz.” Authorities say Sixto was sitting next to Ortiz when a gunman approached and fired a single shot at Ortiz.
The man suspected of being the shooter, Rolfi, was arrested about two weeks earlier and is in custody. Authorities say he has been indicted on drug and weapons charges unrelated to the shooting, and that he confessed to the shooting. Several other people have also been arrested in connection with the case. Rolfi also faces state charges in New Jersey tied to two armed robberies in 2017.
The allegations against Victor are claims made by authorities. No response from him was reported at the time, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
