Police in South Carolina found nine firearms and several notebooks that contained “cryptic writing” in the home of former NFL player Phillip Adams.

According to CNN, search warrants released on Friday by the York County Sheriff’s Office said “numerous notebooks were located with cryptic writing with different designs and emblems” in his home.

Adams committed suicide after shooting Dr. Robert Lesslie, his wife Barbara, two grandchildren, and two air conditioning technicians working outside of their home. Five of the victims were found dead at the scene. The sixth victim, technician Robert Shook, was able to report the crime to his boss before he succumbed to his injuries the next day at a local area hospital.

Adams was a former patient of Dr. Lesslie, according to an interview his father Alonzo gave to Charlotte TV station WCNC. Alonzo Adams told the news outlet that he thought football injuries might have taken a toll on his son’s mental health.
