BART police have named a suspect in the fatal stabbing at the MacArthur BART station in Oakland that killed 18 year old Nia and left her 26 year old sister, Lahtifa, seriously hurt but in stable condition.
According to police, the suspect is a 27 year old man named John, who is wanted in connection with the attack. Officials said surveillance video captured the incident. They also said the knife used in the attack was found at a nearby construction site.
Police described the attack as unprovoked and said a motive is still unclear. At a press conference, a BART police spokesperson said, “Now it’s a matter of bringing this individual into custody. We are really seeking justice for Nia.”
Asked whether race played a role, police said they have no information at this point showing the attack was racially motivated, but they are not ruling it out.
The investigation is ongoing. The suspect had not been charged at the time of this report.
