Two U.S. Virgin Islands police officers and four other men are facing drug trafficking charges after more than 700 pounds of cocaine was reportedly found at Miami Opa Locka Executive Airport, according to Local 10 News.
The officers, Teshawn, 26, and Shakim, 29, reportedly flew from St. Thomas to Miami on Tuesday on a private plane with two other men, Roystin, 28, and Maleek, 27. Local 10 reports that Customs and Border Protection officers spotted the drugs on an X-ray screen and found 294 individually wrapped bricks in the luggage, totaling about 725 pounds. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida announced the charges.
According to a criminal complaint, two more men were waiting at the airport to help move the cocaine and the travelers to other parts of Florida: Tevon, who is Teshawn’s twin brother, and Anthon. Local 10 also reports that Shakim ran when the drugs were discovered.
V.I. Police Commissioner Trevor Velinor said the two officers had passed a standard background check. “There was no indication by VIPD that they were involved in any illegal activities,” he said.
The charges are allegations, and all six men are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Attorney responses were not available at the time of this report.
