Popeyes is heating up 2026 with a pair of new menu additions and the permanent return of a fan favorite. The chain is launching two Honey BBQ Chicken Sandwiches: a classic Honey BBQ Chicken Sandwich ($5.49), featuring a Louisiana herb-and-spice-marinated chicken breast filet, Honey BBQ sauce, pickles, and a toasted brioche bun; and a Honey BBQ Bacon + Cheese Sandwich ($6.99) that adds bacon and Havarti cheese to the mix.
Also making its permanent return is the Chicken Wrap ($3.99), available in classic, spicy, and a new Blackened Ranch variety. Each wrap features a breaded chicken tender, lettuce, shredded cheese, pickles, and a buttermilk-inspired tortilla.
The Wrap Wars are officially on and Popeyes is way ahead of the game,” the chain previously declared when the wraps first launched in 2025.
But to truly understand the cultural weight of a Popeyes chicken sandwich launch, you have to go back to 2019 — one of the most chaotic chapters in fast food history. The fried chicken sandwich debuted on August 12, and though it received good reviews, it was not the phenomenon that it would become. That changed almost overnight when the sandwich went viral, selling out nationwide and triggering hours-long lines, brawls, and full-blown pandemonium at locations across the country.
The chaos turned deadly. In November 2019, Ricoh McClain was convicted of second-degree murder after fatally stabbing Kevin Tyrell Davis, 28, who had cut to the front of the line for chicken sandwiches at an Oxon Hill, Maryland location. McClain was ultimately sentenced to 22 years in prison. Police Chief Hank Stawinski called it a “pointless crime,” noting the entire confrontation lasted just 15 seconds.
A Popeyes spokesperson called the incident “a tragedy,” saying the chain was “saddened to hear about this senseless act of violence.
The new 2026 offerings arrive in a far calmer climate — but Popeyes’ legacy proves no fast food item has ever stirred the pot quite like its chicken sandwich.
