The music scenes in both Detroit and Atlanta are mourning after the violent killing of 36-year-old Qualeisha Barnes, who many fans knew as the rapper “Siditty.”
Originally from Southwest Detroit, Barnes had been living in Atlanta for the last ten years. This week, the tragedy hit home when she was found shot to death inside her car. Barnes was 14 weeks pregnant at the time, and her family is convinced that her pregnancy is exactly why she was targeted.
The shooting happened in the middle of the night, around 1:20 a.m., in an Atlanta neighborhood. Residents reported hearing about four or five shots before seeing a car speed away from the area. When police arrived, they found Barnes unresponsive in the driver’s seat. Investigators say it looks like the killer fired directly through the windshield before taking off. The Atlanta Police Department is currently checking security cameras in the area to try and piece together a timeline and figure out if anyone else was with her.
Outside of her music career, Barnes was a student who was only a year away from finishing her nursing degree. Now, her family is left picking up the pieces and demanding that everyone involved in her death be held accountable. Her mother, Lopez-Stewart, made it clear that anyone who played a part in the setup belongs behind bars, saying, “If you instigate something that causes a murder, then you need some kind of, I mean, you need something. I think you need to go to jail too.”
As the investigation continues, police are asking anyone with information to come forward. For now, a family is left grieving a daughter, a sister, and an unborn child whose lives were cut short in a senseless act of violence.
