President Joe Biden granted pardons to Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired Gen. Mark Milley, and members of the House committee that investigated the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Biden’s decision comes as a direct response to growing fears of political retribution under Donald Trump’s incoming administration.

Trump, who has made no secret of his intent to punish those he deems political enemies, has repeatedly hinted at targeting individuals who challenged his attempts to overturn the 2020 election or investigated his role in the Capitol insurrection. Biden’s pardons aim to protect these key public figures from potential legal or political consequences tied to Trump’s return to the presidency.

“The issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgment that any individual engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offense,” Biden said in a formal statement. “Our nation owes these public servants a debt of gratitude for their tireless commitment to our country.”

Dr. Fauci, who became the face of the nation’s COVID-19 response, and Gen. Milley, who faced sharp criticism from Trump during his previous term, are among the most notable names on Biden’s list. Additionally, members of the Jan. 6 committee, who led the investigation into Trump’s actions during the Capitol riot, have also been targeted by Trump’s allies for their efforts to hold him accountable.

Trump’s incoming administration has already raised alarm by appointing officials who have backed his false election fraud claims and vowed to retaliate against those who stood in opposition to him. Biden’s decision to issue these pardons seeks to prevent Trump from weaponizing government powers against political opponents, a tactic many fear would set a dangerous precedent.
